Archive for the ‘Medicaid cuts’ Category

My Camera Editorial Advisory Board comment published on March 8, 2008, in response to the Camera’s question: Proposed Medicaid cuts could hit Colorado hard. What do you think?

It’s difficult to understand the reasons for the cuts without looking at the budget and the discrepency in the numbers. The Bush administration says the cuts total $15 billion for all states while the House oversight committee says the number is nearly $50 billion. No matter the numbers, no money for Medicaid is enough though government has limits to what it can and should provide. Paying for illegal aliens should get off the books first.

Still, it’s easy for many Americans to look to the government and say, “I need, therefore, you need to provide.” With that attitude, where is individual responsibility? If everything is provided by the government, where is the individual’s incentive to get more education or to look for a better job? Also, where does the the family come into play? While it may seem like an easy solution to turn to government for help, families need to help their own where at all possible.
