Archive for the ‘Christmas’ Category

My Camera Editorial Advisory Board comment published on Dec. 27, 2008, in response to the Camera’s question: What does the holiday season mean to you?

I celebrate Christmas to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. I have hope because of his birth, life, teachings and death. While I enjoy scriptural Christmas stories, I also enjoy the magic of the operetta “Amahl and the Night Visitors” and “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” However, after having had a baby a few days before Christmas in the 1970s, I learned Mary’s ride on a donkey and her stay in a stable was likely more painful than picturesque.

I feel privileged to have had some economically difficult Christmases when I was a child. When I was about 9, someone left a box of oranges and other food on my family’s porch on Christmas Eve. Now, every time I smell oranges, I think of Christmas.

Christmases when my family had little helped me think of those in need, so each year I try to help others. This is a favorite part of Christmas. In addition, I love giving gifts to my family. One Christmas I made four dolls with six outfits each for my children. When I placed them on the piano bench with name tags on them, I could hardly sleep with my excitement.

Still, even giving gifts can be overdone as a Christmas cartoon pointed out. In the cartoon, the Three Wise Men were traveling to Bethlehem with gift boxes on their camels. One said, “Mark my words, Balthazar, we’re starting something with these gifts that’s going to get way out of hand!”
