My Camera Editorial Advisory Board comment published on April 4, 2009:

As Helayne Jones steps down as the Boulder Valley School District Board of Education president, her legacy deserves a look. However, since T.V. coverage of entire board meetings is limited or non-existent in parts of the district, much of the good and not so good Jones accomplished on the board since 2003 and as its president since 2005 simply is not known to all.

Nevertheless, it’s obvious from the district’s Web site that on her watch a new way of referencing school board members either emerged or was ingrained. Instead of simply listing board members’ names and their contact information, three are listed with their degrees. Interestingly, two have advanced degrees in education. The message here is that these board members are more qualified and, therefore, should be noted as such.

This is absolutely the wrong message. Not only is this the wrong message for all current board members, it is absolutely the wrong message for would-be board members running this fall for seats held by Lesley Smith, Patti Smith and Jean Paxton. It doesn’t take a degree, particularly in education, to help board members be better listeners to parents and taxpayers. In fact, the opposite can be the case.
